Renewed Visibility & Energy Performance

The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center is an aquatic facility in Federal Way, Washington constructed for the 1990 Goodwill Games. It has hosted US Olympic Diving Team Trials, NCAA championships, PAC-10 conferences championships, USA Swimming Winter National Championships and Speedo Junior National Championships.

The existing 300 foot long skylight above the main pool had exceeded its lifespan and, as part of a 2018 feasibility study, ARC provided options and cost opinions for various daylighting replacement solutions.

The constructed design achieved the County's goals of filling the main natatorium space with well-balanced, natural daylight while also reducing heating and cooling loads by controlling solar heat gain to deliver energy savings.  The skylight design effectively reduced the overall weight when compared to the existing construction, eliminating the need and cost to modify the existing building's superstructure.
