Located in the heart of downtown Puyallup, Pioneer Park is a two-acre public park that celebrates the town’s founder, Ezra Meeker (a pioneer citizen), and includes a Veteran’s Memorial, playground, Spray Park, Rotary stage, Pavilion, and Restrooms.  The original 1990 restroom building served the community well for multiple decades, but over the years could not keep up with growing demand.  This updated restroom building doubled both the men’s and women’s restroom fixtures, as well as adding 2 brand new family restrooms with diaper changing stations.

Taking cues from the Pioneer Park Pavilion and Public Library that are co-located at the park, the design features a shed roof that “folds” down as the rear wall, and exterior finishes that visually connect all of these site buildings.  The roof sits on top of a band of clerestory windows, which helps to lighten the appearance of the substantial structure.  In addition to these windows, skylights in each restroom bring in an abundance of natural light to the spaces.  The façades are accented with an undulating brick pattern that breaks up the length, and each entrance is articulated by an open lightwell that, in tandem with large graphic signage, establishes clear wayfinding for all visitors.
