Shore Aquatic Center

Port Angeles, wa

R - E - S - P - E - C - T

ARC has been involved with the assessment and renovation of William Shore Pool since the early 2000's. Our early design efforts investigated options for improvements to the 1961 facility, including enhanced aquatic programming and improved building and site design.  In 2017, we began the renovation design, which celebrates and respects the buildings original mid-century style  while providing a sense of contemporary, climate-sensitive design.

An important feature of the additions is exposed steel beams and CLT that are architecturally and structurally compatible with existing wood beams and decking. There are views into key activity areas from the exterior, celebration of stormwater for rain gardens, and protection of walls, and entrances with deep overhangs (something the original building lacked).

Aquatic Design Group, who helped with the study, designed the pools, which include a renovated lap pool with diving area, a renovated activity pool with vortex and lazy river, and a small therapy spa. There is also a very popular 3-lane warm-water lap pool for exercise and free swim. Views of the near-by mountains create a luxury atmosphere in this small town aquatic center.

The prominent entry & large windows welcome the community into their aquatic center. The lobby connects with the large daylit locker rooms with spaces for non-gendered and family changing.
