South Bellevue Community Center

bellevue, wa

Vertical Integration

A steeply-sloped site and surrounding park provided design direction for this new community center to step down the site and open to the forests on all levels. Its exposed wood structure and sand-blasted concrete walls overlap as the simple forms create spaces for lots of activities.  The large double gymnasium is tucked into the hillside and a 3 story climbing wall is a central feature of the lobby.

This project was a joint effort of the Bellevue Parks and Recreation and the Boys & Girls Club.

The vertical connections and daylighting make this community center feel welcoming and grounded to the site.  Outside there are playgrounds and a fun challenge course designed to encourage team building and communication.

A central stair leads from the upper entry to the lower lobby with views of the gymnasium and climbing wall.  Mulit-purpose room, dance room, and fitness spaces connect along the daylight hall.  Public art completes this well used and busy community gathering place.

Expanses of glass provide sweeping forest views, while a stacked floor plan draws natural light into core areas.
